WEEK FIVE – PLAYOFFS
FLYERS 4 HABS 3
The Flyers absolutely had to win this game to stay in Sam Cupp Championship game contention. Score is tied 3-3, face-off deep in the Habs zone with the curfew clock precipitously winding down to a few precious seconds left. The Flyers net is vacant as they have to win this game! Flyers win the face-off – the puck ends up on Lloyd Rogers stick at the top of the circle as he buries the game winner top shelf! The Flyers bench empties in congratulatory mode as the buzzer sounds! Nice win for the guys in orange! Brian Moore with the deuce and sub Marcel Dimitri also score for the Flyers. Habs – Kenny Schaeffler and subs Scott Chodun and Mark Norrington. Mark Norrington and Flyers defenseman Danny Rea get into a first period altercation as both hit the box with double minor penalties. Rea was the recipient of a pretty nice face wash from Norrington.
SHARKS 5 HAWKS 2
The Sharks knock the Hawks out of contention. Jeff Ivory was all over the ice with an excellent performance in a two goal effort! Sub Steve Bayagich also with the deuce. Mike Ala with a single. John “Shifty” Shelton and Latvia call up Arimovich score for the Hawks.
WINGS 5 BRUINS 3
It finally happened! The Wings play spoiler and win their first game of the playoffs behind the two goal efforts of Rob Rowling and sub “Marine” Steiber. The ageless Terry Boyette with their final marker. Puck stopper Scott French shined in nets! This loss ended any slight Championship aspirations the Bruins had. The Johns – McNeilly (2) and Cornish score for the Bruins.
SHARKS 4 WINGS 0
Mike Riddle scores his first of two goals a minute into the game, as the Sharks blank the Wings and end the playoffs on a 3-0 run and clinch a Championship game spot. As in game one – Jeff Ivory and Mike Ala with goals. Billy Schaugg with the well earned whitewash. No Wings highlights, as this very trying Wings season mercifully comes to a close.
FLYERS 4 BRUINS 3
The Flyers win their fifth consecutive playoff game and hope for a Sharks loss – didn’t happen! Once again – Brian Moore with a two goal game for the Flyers. Singles for Mike Miller and Paulie “Knuckles” Polizzi. Bruins sub Scott Bozyk (2) and “Angry” Joey Ventimiglio find the back of the net for the men in yellow.
HABS 6 HAWKS 0
The score was not indicative of how this game was played. The Hawks had territorial advantage – but just couldn’t solve Habs net-minder Dar. Dar with a stellar effort between the pipes and the well earned whitewash. Dar’s son, sub Mark Norrington with the natural hat trick as he scores the Habs first three first period goals! Al Pyc with two goals. Al’s second goal was a thing of beauty penalty shot, five hole winner! Moncton call up Scott Chodun with a bad angle top shelf goal. The Hawks played with nine players this game as winger Ward Peterson left this inconsequential game to attend a family function. A comical event occurred, as with seconds left in the game, Dars’s son Mark has the puck deep in the Hawks zone and fires the puck from 200 feet directly at Dad. Mark knows how to make the puck skip and then curve, which caught Dad off guard and almost wrecked his shutout as Dar had to make a valiant toe save! Pretty funny!
