This was an interesting game, as the Hawks had the Sharks in shallow water, only to see the Fish pull it out late in the game! Deuces wild for Bruce “The Enabler” Gooel and Pat “Crazy Legs” Berry, whose first goal was nothing but maximize effort! But the crushing goal was from General Robert E. Lee, who split the D for the game winning goal with just over a minute left in the game. Captain Billy Hagen goes twine twice for his Hawks. Hawks sub defenseman John Zucchini buries a juicy rebound. A comedic moment happened early in the game, as Sharks forward Doug Wargo was whistled down for a penalty. The exasperated Wargo goes: “What did I do?” Referee Rob Duff told him you took a slap shot! Whoops! Referee Duff was informed slap shots are good – Lol! Hence – this was a penalty free game.
WINGS 2 BRUINS 1
Both goalies – “Ticker” of the winning Wings and Mike Schlimgen of the Bruins put on a goaltending clinic for the empty arena! Jimmy George and sub Mike Garlick tally for the Wings. Dougie Roehl buries a slap-shot for the Bruins.
SHARKS 4 FLYERS 1
The first place and 6-0 Sharks continue to swim upstream as the result of this game was never in doubt. Once again leading his troops – General Robert E. Lee with a two goal game. Singles for Bruce Gooel and the “Best Worst Hockey Player” Doug Wargo. Puck stopper Brian Miller with a very light workload. Captain Ryan O”Rourke with the Flyers only goal of the day. The Flyers racked up four minor penalties: two body checking, tripping and a solo roughing for Captain O’Rourke.
HABS 3 BRUINS 1
1-1 entering the final period – then the Habs, who are undefeated in their past five games, score in the first 12 seconds of the period and follow up five minutes later with another goal for the doubleheader sweep! Mike Ala with a 1 & 2 game. Line-mate Chuck Mouraine and defenseman Kenny “Prime Time” Wilkins with the Habs markers. Sub goalie Billy Papciak with another strong game in nets. The ageless Joe Plati with the lone Bruins goal in this penalty free game.
WINGS 6 HAWKS 2
No surprise here, as the Wings once again dominate the woebegone winless Hawks! The Wings execute their game plan to perfection, as they continually shoot low to a very high degree of success! Deuces wild for Jimmy George and Al Sparks. Singles for Brian Belloli and Bo Altherr. Goalie “Ticker” put on his best Dominik Hasek impersonation, as he was doing backwards snow angels and still keeping the puck out of the net! Defenseman Howard Smith takes an errant puck in the head and self proclaims, that was the safest place for the puck to hit me! Ronnie Meltsner and sub Scott Leslie score for the Hawks. A little sidebar on this game, as the first period was played in a swamp! The Zamboni driver drenched the ice! This is the same Zamboni driver that was fired at the Hazel Park Arena when he did major damage by running into the boards! See the picture below as a player attempts to fix the damage with a drill. The game had to be moved to the other rink. Then he resurfaces at Troy! Pun intended!
