Brendan Shanahan was asked this question:
Is hockey hard? I don’t know, you tell me. We need to have the strength and power of a football player, the stamina of a marathon runner, and the concentration of a brain surgeon. But we need to put all this together while moving at high speeds on a cold and slippery surface while 5 other guys use clubs to try and kill us. Oh yeah, did I mention that this whole time we’re standing on blades 1/8 of an inch thick? Is ice hockey hard? I don’t know, you tell me. Next
HABS 3 BRUINS 1
Kenny “Prime Time” Wilkins with the game winning goal and subs Dad Mike and son Matt Lawson with the bookend goals! Dave Gaskey with a very light workload. Returning after a two week absence – Eddie “The Eagle” Higgins scores for the Bruins. Goalie Mike Schlimgen with several head turning saves!
FLYERS 7 SHARKS 0
Whoa! Where did all these goals come from for the light scoring Flyers? I know! The newly formed line of Ryan O’Rourke(3 & 1), Mike Fox (1 & 4) and Chuck Moraine (1 & 3) total 12 points in the game! Oh – and Pat “Crazy Legs” Berry with a two goal game. Goalie Mike Haines with the well deserved whitewash! No red flags were on the full capacity beach, as there were zero Shark sightings in this penalty free game.
HAWKS 5 WINGS 0
The Hawks score twice in the games first three minutes and the rout was on! Billy Hagen with the deuce. Singles for Rick Batchelder, Robert Stempian and sub Chuck Bowers. Continuing his hot goaltending since attending the Detroit Lions first playoff game victory and only allowing one goal in last week’s doubleheader – Bobby Rutkoske with the shutout! No Wings highlights.
HABS 2 HAWKS 1
A well played contest as Robbie Porter and sub Mike Lawson tally for the first place Habs, behind the stellar puck stopping efforts of Dave Gaskey! Billy Hagen with a top shelf goal for the Hawks.
SHARKS 4 BRUINS 1
Ben Haynes scores 30 seconds into the contest for the Fish. Rob Lee, Todd Schurman and St. Veronica grade school alumnus, located in East Detroit, Mi. – Jimmy Klimkowski also score for the Sharks, as they split on the day. Goalie Brian Miller with a strong game in nets. Bo Altherr with the Bruins marker as they drop a duece.
WINGS 0 FLYERS 0
This scoreless game has many interesting aspects to it! Obviously, kudos to the goalies – Mike Haines and the below pictured Superman – who recored number 293 career shutout! Now, there have been many 0-0 games and I’m sure a team like the Wings, who failed to score in both games today has also happened. But after 15 years of writing this column, I do not recollect a team getting shutout in both games and still obtaining a point! Interesting! The Wings PK was at top efficiency – killing off five penalties, as they are now winless in their past seven games.
Who are the four NHL goalies to play in 1,000 games?
