”We brought in seven players for a series of psychological and physical tests. One of them was Trevor Linden.
He called me the night before and said, ’Hi, Mr. Burke, it’s Trevor Linden. My dad said I should call you because I can’t come on Saturday.’ I said, ’Well, Trevor, none of the players call me Mr. Burke. Call me Burkie. And, why can’t you come?’ ’My dad said I had to call you to say I couldn’t come.’ I said, ’I know, I get that part. I heard that twice – your dad made you call me and you can’t come. This is the second time now, why can’t you come?’
Minnesota had the first pick overall, so I thought they were up to something. And Linden said, ’Well it’s branding day at my uncle’s ranch in Medicine Hat, and my dad says I have to stay and help him.’ So, I said, ’I’m a city boy, so tell me what branding is.’ He said, ’Well, we run range cattle up here in the Hat, and in the spring we round them up and we brand all the calves. We turn one-year-old male calves into steers.’
I said, ’Well, what’s your job on branding day?’ He said, ’When the cattle come out of the pen, I grab them and hold them down and pin them while we brand them and cut their nuts off.’ I said, ’You can skip these tests’. We never tested him!”

HAWKS   2    SHARKS   0

A well played game by both squads, as the Hawks successfully kill off four penalties and the Sharks do likewise on a long two man disadvantage.  Scoreless entering the final stanza then retired police officer Billy Reiss goes five hole minutes into the final period for the eventual game winning goal.  Then – fired up by the Federal Reserve cutting interest rates once again – retired banker Waz Sarweh goes top shelf for the insurance marker!  Hats off to puck stopper Gordy Nadolsky who shined in nets!  No red flags on the beach.

FLYERS   5     BRUINS   3

Greg Stacey leads the Flyers with netting their first two goals.  Trevor Wrobel and The Mikes – Akins and Nalepa also reach the back of the net.  Steve “Mario” Lemieux with the hat trick assist.  Jeff Steiber and The Robs – Rowling and Montgomery tally for the Bruins.

HABS   4    WINGS   3

Talk about on a roll!  After reverting back to his natural forward position, Purdue basketball coach Matt Painter lookalike(See Picture Below) Joey Reiss with the tour du chapeau naturel!  Joey now has scored in five consecutive games for a total of nine goals!  Oh – Paul Elsey Jr. with the Habs first goal.  Ian Axworthy and subs Mark Micolo Jr. and J. Robillard with the Wings goals.

BRUINS    6     WINGS   3

Still fired up – after attending the Jelly Roll concert Wednesday night – Rob Rowling with the trick for his Bruins!  Singles for John Cornish, Ron Nanney and the storied local scoring machine – “Downtown” Jimmy Brown.  Ian Axworthy, Scott Chodun and sub Mark Micolo Jr. score for the Wings who drop a deuce today.

FLYERS   3    HAWKS   2

Mike “Padre” Nalepa scores twice for the Flyers as they win both games today.  Greg Stacy with their middle goal.  Goaler Billy Papciak with several highlight reel saves!  Mike T. Brown and Billy Reiss with the Hawks markers.

HABS   7    SHARKS   4

Deuces wild for longtime hockey coach Steve Bayagich and Paul Elsey Jr. as the first place Habs sweep on the day.  Singles for Nate McNaughrty, Jeff Funk and sub E. Wagner.  MVP Funk(See Picture Below) was all over the ice this game as he also records two helpers.  He only “Funked” one player today and he was on the other team!  A walk back in time.  Former Sting and longtime storied hockey player and former Clinton Twp. Fire Chief Steve Kovalacik and Funk were teammates on the Habs around 12 years ago.  Steve got “Funked” and never returned to the ice again.  True story.  I have other Funk stories – stay tuned!  “Angry” Joe, Ward Peterson, Mark Micolo and Craig Bastuba score for the Sharks, who extend their losing streak to three games.

ONE OF THE BEST CLASSIC UNIFORMS AND A CLASSIC CHARACTER OF THE GAME!

QUESTION – WHO IS THE SABER IN THE BACKGROUND?

HINT – A LONGTIME MONTREAL CANADIAN.
