”We brought in seven players for a series of psychological and physical tests. One of them was Trevor Linden.
He called me the night before and said, ’Hi, Mr. Burke, it’s Trevor Linden. My dad said I should call you because I can’t come on Saturday.’ I said, ’Well, Trevor, none of the players call me Mr. Burke. Call me Burkie. And, why can’t you come?’ ’My dad said I had to call you to say I couldn’t come.’ I said, ’I know, I get that part. I heard that twice – your dad made you call me and you can’t come. This is the second time now, why can’t you come?’
Minnesota had the first pick overall, so I thought they were up to something. And Linden said, ’Well it’s branding day at my uncle’s ranch in Medicine Hat, and my dad says I have to stay and help him.’ So, I said, ’I’m a city boy, so tell me what branding is.’ He said, ’Well, we run range cattle up here in the Hat, and in the spring we round them up and we brand all the calves. We turn one-year-old male calves into steers.’
I said, ’Well, what’s your job on branding day?’ He said, ’When the cattle come out of the pen, I grab them and hold them down and pin them while we brand them and cut their nuts off.’ I said, ’You can skip these tests’. We never tested him!”

SHARKS   3   FLYERS   2

The Sharks do all their scoring in the first period as they play a great game and edge the Flyers!  Goalie Brian Miller stood tall in nets!  Doug “Jeff” Beck strums in the game winning goal.  Robert Stempian and Ben Haynes with earlier goals.  Jimmy George and Chuck Bowers tally for the Flyers in this penalty free game.

HABS   2     BRUINS   2

A very entertaining old school hockey game!  Goalies Dave Gaskey and one of the good guys in the game – Mike Schlimgen – were both outstanding between the pipes!  Dougie Roehl and Marine Jim Scully score for the men in yellow.  Mike Ala and Bob “Bugsy” Watson tally for the Habs.

WINGS   5    HAWKS   2

Captain Brian Belloli leads his Wings with a two goal game.  Singles for Mike Lawson, John Dooley and sub Robbie Olmstead.  Bobby Rutkoske was back in nets this week after forward/defensman Mark Smyth admirably filled in for him last week.  Captain Billy Hagen goes twine twice for his Hawks.

SHARKS   3     BRUINS   2

The third place Fish extend their winning streak to three games and are now are only two points behind the leading Flyers, with four games remaining in the first half season.  Robert Stempian had a hand in all of his teams goals with a 1 & 2 game.  Doug Beck and sub John Zuccarini also score.  Robbie Porter and “Black” Jack Priauix(At the Final Buzzer) score for the Bruins in this penalty free game.

HAWKS   2    HABS   1

This was a barn burner with major ramifications for the second place Hawks, who are now a single point behind the top spot Flyers.  Score tied 1-1, then Bobby Watson of the Habs incurs a late game minor holding penalty.  Watson watches forlornly in the box, as Billy Hagen buries the game winning power play goal with 31 seconds left in the game!  Dave Debrincat with the Hawks initial goal.  Goaler Allen Clarke was stellar in nets!  Adam Godard with the lone Habs marker.

FLYERS   4     WINGS   1

A big win for the Flyers as they precariously remain in first place by a single point!  Subbing for Sammy Bonanno(More on that Later) former Detroit Tiger Robbie Grossman lookalike(See Picture Below) Robbie Aughe with a two goal game.  Bruce Buntin and Bill Murdock also score.  The red hot Brian Belloli with the lone Wings goal.  Paulie “Knuckes” Polizzi of the WIngs with a minor solo roughing penalty.  The league extends it get well wishes to the Flyers Sammy Bonanno, who is out indefinitely with a life threatening upper body injury due to a very precarious hit from behind from a Habs players last week, that left him hospitalized.  Hopefully we will see Sam back in the second half!
